Important Information on the Current Airport Strikes in Germany

On Monday, significant disruptions in air traffic are expected at numerous German airports. The reason for this is a 24-hour warning strike called by the Verdi union. The goal is to increase pressure on employers in the ongoing collective bargaining negotiations for public sector employees. A total of eleven airports are affected. Here’s what you need to know about your departure.

Impact on Flight Operations

According to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), all scheduled departures and arrivals will be affected by the strikes and therefore must be canceled. Travelers should check directly with their airlines or travel agencies regarding refunds, rebookings, and alternative travel options.
Current forecasts suggest that approximately 3,400 flights could be canceled, impacting over 500,000 passengers. All travelers are advised to check the status of their flights in advance.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)

Regular flight operations in the capital will be completely suspended due to the ground staff strike.

Frankfurt Airport (FRA)

The airport operator, Fraport, has announced that neither regular passenger operations nor transit travel will be possible on Monday. 150,000 passengers and 1,170 flights are affected. Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport or use Frankfurt airport parking facilities. Lufthansa is working on an alternative flight schedule.

Munich Airport (MUC)

Security and ground handling staff are participating in the strike.
Out of the 820 scheduled flight operations, the majority are expected to be canceled or delayed. Special flight schedules are being prepared.

Hamburg Airport (HAM)

On Sunday, Hamburg already experienced severe disruptions as all flights were suspended for the entire day.
On Monday, baggage and aircraft handling services will be on strike. Additionally, evening check-in services will not be available. Around 284 flights with more than 40,000 passengers are affected.

Tip: Plan extra time, travel with hand luggage, or minimize checked baggage.

Airports in North Rhine-Westphalia (Düsseldorf DUS, Cologne/Bonn CGN)

Düsseldorf Airport expects significant disruptions.
For Monday, 338 flight operations were scheduled in Düsseldorf and 160 in Cologne/Bonn, many of which may be canceled or rescheduled. Dortmund Airport is also expected to experience delays.

Tip: No late-night check-in services will be available on Sunday in Düsseldorf.

Stuttgart Airport (STR)

Check-ins, baggage handling, and flight operations at Stuttgart Airport will be impacted.
Of 177 scheduled flights, only a fraction may take place.

Tip: Check your flight status, use online check-in, and travel with as little luggage as possible.

Other Affected Airports

Airports in Hannover, Bremen, and Leipzig-Halle will also experience major disruptions.

Background of the Strike

According to Verdi, the strike was unavoidable because employers have so far failed to present an acceptable offer. The union demands an eight percent salary increase, at least €350 more per month, and higher allowances for night and weekend shifts. Additionally, Verdi is pushing for three additional days off. Employers have rejected these demands as unaffordable.
Travelers should check their flight status early and consider alternative travel arrangements.
