Frankfurt Airport is setting a global precedent with a groundbreaking innovation in security Frankfurt Airport is setting a global precedent with a groundbreaking innovation in security screening. Following a successful one-year test phase in Terminal 1, Hall A, the German Federal Police has approved the QPS Walk2000 scanner from Rohde & Schwarz for regular operation. This cutting-edge walk-through scanner enables faster and more comfortable security checks—a milestone in aviation security. In the future, this technology is also expected to be deployed at additional checkpoints in Terminal 1 and the upcoming Terminal 3. Up to 18,000 passengers pass through the airport’s busy security lanes daily, which will now be optimized with the new 360° walk-through scanner.
The innovative walk-through scanner allows passengers to proceed through security at a normal walking pace without having to pause. Unlike traditional body scanners, there is no need to stand still in a specific position. The millimeter-wave technology scans through clothing and detects potential threats in real time. Any anomalies are displayed on a gender-neutral avatar, allowing security personnel to focus secondary screening only on affected areas—making the process more efficient for both passengers and staff.
“With the 360° walk-through scanner, we are setting a new global standard for security screening in air travel. During the test phase, we worked closely with the Federal Police to optimize the device for operational use and ensure certification requirements were met. We are committed to investing in the latest technologies to make security screening faster and more comfortable while maintaining the highest level of security.”
The successful introduction of the QPS Walk2000 was made possible through close collaboration between Fraport, the German Federal Police, and technology company Rohde & Schwarz.
Andreas Hägele, Head of Microwave Imaging at Rohde & Schwarz, stated:
“The joint evaluation of the walk-through scanner at Frankfurt Airport by the Federal Police and Fraport is an excellent example of successful collaboration between all parties involved. We are proud to contribute to a modern, innovative, and globally pioneering form of airport security screening.”
Thanks to this new technology, travelers benefit from a smoother process at security checkpoints. The walk-through scanner speeds up screening, reducing wait times and enhancing the overall passenger experience. The system also minimizes the need for full-body pat-downs, making security checks more comfortable for travelers.
Since taking over the management of aviation security screening, Fraport has invested approximately €22 million in state-of-the-art CT technology and optimized lane concepts. This highlights the airport operator’s commitment to continuously modernizing security infrastructure and improving the travel experience.
Since January 1, 2023, Fraport has been responsible for organizing, managing, and conducting approximately 160 security screening lanes. The Federal Police remains responsible for key regulatory tasks, including setting security standards, overseeing legal and technical compliance, certifying new security infrastructure, and ensuring armed security at checkpoints.
By becoming the first airport worldwide to introduce walk-through scanners in regular operation, Frankfurt Airport is taking a significant step toward more efficient and passenger-friendly security screening. This groundbreaking technology accelerates the process, reduces waiting times, and enhances passenger comfort without compromising security. The success of this project could serve as a blueprint for airports worldwide looking to implement similar solutions.
