The Düsseldorf Airport is set to undergo significant modernization and expansion in the coming decades. With the Master Plan 2045, several key upgrades are in the works, including an expanded terminal, a new security system, enhanced retail areas, and innovative mobility solutions.
Düsseldorf Airport had a successful year, surpassing 20 million passengers for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. "This is an outstanding achievement that highlights our airport’s importance as a reliable and forward-thinking transportation hub," said airport CEO Lars Redeligx.
However, the airport is aiming even higher. According to the Rheinische Post, the Master Plan 2045 sets an ambitious goal: transforming Düsseldorf into the leading airport of its size in Europe. This involves major renovations and expansions.
One of the biggest projects is the expansion of the terminal. On the current P12 parking lot in the southwest of the airport, an additional 11,600 square meters will be built across two levels, offering:
✔ Three new baggage carousels for faster luggage pickup
✔ An optimized Lost & Found Center
✔ Expanded passport control with 12 counters and six Easy-Pass lanes
Additionally, connections to the new U81 metro line will be improved, and the airport’s shopping options will increase, including a larger supermarket.
A key feature of the expansion is a new marketplace inside the terminal, designed to create a modern, open atmosphere.
📌 Additional 6,000 square meters of terminal space will be added between Gates A & B and B & C.
📌 The central duty-free store will be redesigned as a main shopping attraction.
📌 More restaurants and retail shops will provide an improved passenger experience.
Security will be significantly upgraded to streamline the passenger experience:
✅ Checkpoint B will be removed, consolidating operations into Checkpoints A and C.
✅ State-of-the-art CT scanners will eliminate the need to remove liquids and electronics from hand luggage.
✅ Quick Boarding Gates will allow passengers to scan their boarding passes themselves.
✅ Biometric technology will enable contactless boarding, reducing wait times.
✈️ The Hugo-Junkers Lounge will be expanded with a 125-square-meter outdoor terrace.
✈️ The Open Sky Lounge will be modernized to better serve both business and leisure travelers.
✈️ The observation deck will be redesigned to make it a popular attraction once again.
🚗 The existing P2 parking garage will be demolished to make space for short-term parking zones and bus stops.
🚗 New parking structures will be built further from the terminal, increasing capacity from 20,000 to 30,000 spaces.
🚁 A Vertiport for electric air taxis will be constructed on top of one of the new parking garages.
☀️ Large-scale solar panel installations will be added across airport buildings and the northwest sector.
